Statement From Public Safety Minister Peter Van Loan on the Death of RCMP Superintendent Douglas Coates

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 16, 2010) - "On behalf of all Canadians, I am deeply saddened to learn of the death of RCMP Superintendent Doug Coates. For the second time in a week, Canadians have learned of the loss of a committed law enforcement official.

Superintendent Coates was the Acting Commissioner of Operations for the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti. He will be remembered for his passion and commitment to making streets safer in Canada and Haiti.

I extend my deepest condolences to Doug's wife Lise, and their children Julie, Mathieu and Luc. We thank you for sharing with us an inspiring individual who lost his life while building safer communities for others in one of the world's poorest countries.

Superintendent Coates' son Luc expressed it very well when he recently spoke of his father's deep conviction for his work and his passion to help others. Luc said it was this passion that drew him back to Haiti again and again for more than 15 years.

We must always remember the courage of our law enforcement men and women who work every day to keep the rest of us safe. Superintendent Coates died in service to Canada. His untimely death is a tragic loss for the RCMP and all Canadians."
