Statement by the Hon. Helena Guergis, PC, MP Secretary of State (Foreign Affairs and International Trade) (Sport) on the death of Don Wittman

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 21, 2008) -

It was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Don Wittman.

For almost fifty years, the voice of Don Wittman was synonymous with sport in Canada. Born in Herbert, Saskatchewan, he got his start as a news reporter with CFQC radio in Saskatoon in 1955. He also worked for CJNB radio in North Battleford and was only 24 when he joined CBC Winnipeg on New Year's Day,1961.

During his time with the broadcaster, he covered 18 Summer and Winter Olympic Games, 36 Grey Cup games, curling's Brier and Tournament of Hearts and countless Stanley Cup hockey games. He witnessed and reported on the highs and lows of Canadian and international sport, from Donovan Bailey's dramatic win at the Atlanta Olympic Games, to the Munich tragedy of the 1972 Olympic Games.

Along with the thousands of Canadians for whom his voice will live on in memory, I extend my deepest sympathies to the friends and family of Don Wittman.
