Statement by the Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State (Sport), on the Occasion of the Re-Election of Jacques Rogge as President of the International Olympic Committee

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 9, 2009) - "On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I would like to congratulate Mr. Jacques Rogge on his re-election as President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Canada, as host of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, is thankful for the great support and cooperation received from the IOC. With just 21 days before the Olympic Torch is welcomed in Victoria to start its journey here, Canadians from coast to coast to coast are embracing the Olympic spirit and our athletes are gearing up for the gold. We look forward to welcoming you to the Games in 126 days.

"Our Government is committed to supporting our athletes and helping them excel from playground to podium. We are very proud of our athletes: in their drive for excellence they set a fine example for Canadians of all ages."

Jacques Rogge has been President of the IOC since 2001. The IOC is the cornerstone of the Olympic network. It coordinates the various elements of the Olympics: National Olympic Committees, International Sports Federations, and Organising Committees for the Olympic Games, as well as athletes, broadcasters, and other partners. It supports the member organizations of the Olympic Movement and promotes Olympic values.
