Statement by the Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State (Sport), on the Occasion of the World Cup in Speed Skating

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 9, 2009) - Canadian athletes gave stellar performances in World Cup long-track speed skating in Calgary on December 5 and 6, 2009.

Christine Nesbitt won a gold medal in the women's 1000-metre race and a silver in the 1500-metre race, Kristina Groves won gold in the 1500-metre race, and the women's team won gold in the team pursuit. Denny Morrison won bronze in the men's 1000-metre and 1500-metre races, Jamie Gregg won bronze in the 500-metre race, and the men's team took home the silver medal in the team pursuit.

As Minister of State (Sport) and on behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to congratulate our medallists and commend the other Canadian athletes who participated in this competition. Your hard work and dedication are producing great results. As Canadians everywhere look forward to cheering on our athletes at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games, I have no doubt that we will "Own the Podium" in less than 70 days.
