Statement by the Honourable James Moore Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 29, 2008) - It is a great pleasure for me to congratulate the nominees and winners of the 23rd Annual Gemini Awards.

The quality and scope of talent-96 categories-being recognized with this year's awards illustrate why Canada has such a stellar reputation for unique and innovative English-language programming. By paying tribute to excellence and celebrating outstanding achievements, the Geminis play an important role in increasing audience appreciation of Canadian television at home and around the world.

The Canadian television industry contributes to the creative and economic life of this country, and our Government is proud to support the industry through a variety of programs and tax credits.

On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I want to commend the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television on establishing the Gemini Awards and on its commitment to ensuring the strength and vitality of Canada's audiovisual industry.
