Statement by the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on the Announcement of the Winners of the National Newspaper Awards

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 25, 2009) -

Throughout the country, we have access to newspapers that paint a picture of the Canadian reality. These newspapers address our unique challenges and concerns while highlighting the many possibilities available to us in the current regional, national, and international context. Through the quality and diversity of their content, these newspapers are a source of information, entertainment, and reflection for all Canadians.

For 60 years, the National Newspaper Awards have highlighted the outstanding work done by Canadian journalists to give their readers the latest political, economic, social, cultural, and sports news. The quality of the writing, photos, and illustrations they regularly provide is equalled only by their curiosity, their analytical skills, and their dedication to journalism.

On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I want to congratulate all the winners of the National Newspaper Awards. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Canadian Newspaper Association for fostering the growth of Canada's anglophone and francophone press for the benefit of Canadians and Canada's democratic values.
