Statement by the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on the Awarding of the 2009 Duke and Duchess of York Photography Prize

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 7, 2009) - Through their art, photographers portray our world and contribute significantly to Canada's rich heritage. Our Government recognizes the importance of arts and culture to our lives and our economy. We are pleased to provide significant support for this segment through the programs of the Department of Canadian Heritage and the Canada Council for the Arts, as well as several other federal organizations.

With the Duke and Duchess of York Prize for Photography, the Canada Council for the Arts pays tribute to professional Canadian artists for creative work in photography. Donald Weber, winner of the 2009 Prize, has exhibited his work at galleries and festivals around the world. In addition to being recognized by the online publication PDN (Photo District News) and the American Photo Magazine, Mr. Weber has received the Lange-Taylor Documentary Prize, the World Press Award, and a Guggenheim Fellowship.

On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I want to congratulate Donald Weber on receiving the 2009 Duke and Duchess of York Photography Prize.
