Statement by the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on the Death of Goldie Semple

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 11, 2009) - It is with great sadness that I learned of the death of Canadian actress Goldie Semple.

A classical actress known for her warmth and wit, Ms. Semple spent 17 seasons with the Shaw Festival, where she had roles in many productions, including The Importance of Being Earnest, Easy Virtue, Peter Pan, Hearbreak House, and Candida. She also spent nine seasons at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, with roles that included Cleopatra in Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra and Maggie the Cat in Tennessee Williams's Cat On a Hot Tin Roof.

Ms. Semple's career as a Canadian actress took her to stages across the country, including the Vancouver Playhouse, the Manitoba Theatre Centre, Alberta Theatre Projects, Canadian Stage, and Tarragon Theatre in Toronto.

I join with Canadians across the country in extending my sincere condolences to Ms. Semple's family and friends.
