Statement by the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on the Occasion of the Presentation of the 2009 Libris Awards

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 22, 2009) - All across the country, there are men and women helping make sure that Canadian readers have access to literary works that inform and entertain, and allow them to dream, travel, and reflect. Those who help shape our literary landscape-booksellers, authors, publishers, illustrators, graphic designers, and distributors, among others-play a crucial role in ensuring the vitality of the Canadian publishing industry. Their passion for books, their desire to pass on their discoveries and ideas to readers, and their undeniable talent are being recognized with the presentation of the 2009 Libris Awards.

Our Government is proud to support the development of Canada's book scene through a number of programs and activities. Foremost among these is our Book Publishing Industry Development Program, which aims to increase access to works by Canadian authors. Our new National Translation Program for Book Publishing does its part to broaden Canadians' access to the cultural wealth of our country's English- and French-speaking communities.

On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I offer my sincere congratulations to the finalists and winners of the 2009 Libris Awards. I would also like to thank the members of the Canadian Booksellers Association who, through the Libris Awards, recognize excellence in Canada's literary scene and help raise the profile of this sector's most talented artists and artisans.
