Statement by the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on the Occasion of the 2009 Canadian Country Music Awards

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 13, 2009) - Country music holds a special place in the hearts of Canadians and is an important part of our identity. With origins that reflect our rural heritage, today's country music continues to evolve and to make a vital contribution to our music industry. And it appeals to Canadians in all parts of the country-from the smallest communities to the largest urban centres.

Our Government recognizes the importance of the music industry in Canada, and we are pleased to offer programs that support its development and growth. The recent renewal of the Canada Music Fund for a five-year period will provide long-term stability for the sector. It will also ensure that a wide variety of Canadian music is accessible on multiple platforms and will increase the popularity of Canadian artists at home and abroad.

On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I commend the Canadian Country Music Association on recognizing the best and brightest on Canada's country music scene through the Canadian Country Music Awards, and I congratulate this year's talented nominees.
