Statement by the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on the Occasion of the 2009 Giller Prize

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 12, 2009) - Canadian books reach out to audiences everywhere. Our talented authors bring their stories to life and transport their readers into another place. At home and abroad, our books reach into the minds and hearts of readers everywhere.

It is important to recognize the major contribution of Canadian literature. The Scotiabank Giller Prize has been showcasing our authors and rewarding their talents for novels or short stories for 16 years.

On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I would like to congratulate Linden MacIntyre, winner of the 2009 Giller Prize. I also want to congratulate the other finalists on their fine work. Together, your hard work and dedication have created books that millions of people around the world can enjoy and that provide a source of inspiration for up-and-coming Canadian authors. We are truly proud that your works are part of our identity. I would also like to extend heartfelt thanks to Jack Rabinovitch and Scotiabank for creating this opportunity to place great Canadian literature front and centre on the world stage.
