Statement by the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages,on the Occasion of the 24th Annual Gemini Awards

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 14, 2009) - Television is a powerful tool: it entertains, informs, and enlightens; it helps preserve cultures and weaves a sense of common understanding across Canada's vast geography. A vibrant television industry contributes to the strength of this country's economy and builds our national pride. Our Government recognizes the importance of arts and culture to our communities, our identity, and our economy. We are proud to invest in a variety of programs and tax credits that promote programming that reflects a Canadian perspective on the world in which we live.

The Gemini Awards celebrate the accomplishments and excellence in Canada's English-language programming. They provide a showcase for the television industry to recognize its finest creators and pay tribute to its greatest works, which are appreciated by audiences in Canada and around the world. Ninety-nine awards honour unique Canadian talent.

On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I would like to congratulate the winners and commend the nominees of this year's Gemini Awards. You are an inspiration to young Canadians exploring a career in front of or behind the camera. I would also like to thank the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television for putting quality Canadian programming in the spotlight.
