Statement by the Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety, in Response to the Arrests in Ottawa

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 26, 2010) - "A short time ago, the RCMP informed Canadians that a number of individuals have been charged with terrorism-related offences under the Criminal Code. As to specifics of the case, officials have spoken to the details that can be given at this time and it would be inappropriate for me to comment further as the investigation is ongoing. The process for determining guilt or innocence in this case will proceed as is appropriate in a fair and democratic system. Law enforcement will investigate, and the courts will weigh the evidence and come to a judgement.

But while I won't comment on this particular case, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Canadian intelligence and law enforcement agencies for their work since 9/11 in ensuring terrorist criminal activity is thwarted in Canada. I applaud their past success in disrupting terrorist plots, resulting in strong criminal cases that have resulted in convictions for terrorist offences. Recent successful prosecutions involve the Toronto 18, Momin Khawaja, and Said Namouh. The RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police), CSIS (Canadian Security Intelligence Service), and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), in carrying out their distinct mandates, continue to play a central role in preventing activity that may threaten our safety and security.

Our government monitors national security concerns and is vigilant in protecting against threats to our country. Canada is not immune to terrorism. We are not immune from international or home-grown radicalization. I have said this before: The threat is real and we cannot be complacent.

While our government and security officials stand on guard to address threats that face all of us as Canadians, all freedom-loving Canadians also play a role in the protection of our nation.

Today, just as we thank those who protect and preserve Canadian freedom against terror, I call on all Canadians to stand up and be vigilant against the terrorist threat against our nation."
