Statement by the Minister of National Defence Congratulating the Crew of HMCS Toronto

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 1, 2007) - The Honourable Peter Gordon MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, issued the following statement today:

"I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the crew of HMCS TORONTO for their contribution to the rescue efforts off the coast of Yemen following a sudden volcano eruption yesterday.

This is a prime example of the professionalism and dedication of the men and women of the Canadian Forces, who stand ready to serve and assist in times of crisis anywhere around the world.

I am also very proud of HMCS TORONTO's participation in Operation SEXTANT, Canada's contribution to Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG 1), an international naval rapid deployment fleet operating in the Mediterranean and around the African continent. The TORONTO has been deployed since July and will return home to Halifax in December.

Canada is committed to supporting NATO deployments around the world. Operation SEXTANT, which is composed of ships from six different nations, and this rescue operation are proud examples of the importance of international cooperation and the importance and relevance of NATO in today's global environment."
