Statement: Minister of Public Safety Commends the RCMP and its Partners for Arrests in the Investment Industry

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 26, 2007) - The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, made the following statement today in response to charges laid in Toronto by the RCMP relating to fraud, money laundering and possession of property obtained by crime.

"Canada's New Government is committed to tackling crime, including capital market fraud and white-collar crime.

I would like to commend the RCMP and its partners, both in Canada and around the world for their hard work and collaboration in this complex operation. These charges are based on allegations that funds from Canadian investors were fraudulently used to operate a business without investors' knowledge.

This 27 month criminal investigation was a joint effort between the RCMP, the Ontario Provincial Police, the Ontario Securities Commission and several Canadian financial institutions. It also included assistance from international authorities in at least 11 other countries, including Switzerland, Austria, the Bailiwick of Jersey, Hong Kong, Turks & Caicos, England, Israel, the United States, Bermuda, Italy, Panama and Cyprus.

Today's charges demonstrate the importance of working with our international partners to combat white-collar crime in Canada and around the world.

Our government remains deeply committed to tackling all forms of crime."
