Statement: Minister Van Loan Commends Toronto Airport Drug Enforcement Unit on Major Drug Seizure

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 28, 2009) - The Honourable Peter Van Loan, Minister of Public Safety, made the following statement in response to the news that the Greater Toronto Area Drug Section's newly formed Controlled Delivery Team working in conjunction with the Toronto Airport Drug Enforcement Unit (TADEAU), has made its first major seizure of alleged illegal drugs. Approximately 117 kilograms of heroin and $650,000 in cash has been seized. Three people are facing charges.

"The combined efforts of law enforcement have, once again, resulted in keeping illegal drugs off our streets and out of our communities," said Minister Van Loan. "I commend the outstanding cooperation of law enforcement agencies including the RCMP and CBSA on this major seizure of alleged illegal drugs."

The Government of Canada is committed to giving police the tools they need in their fight against crime. This government has committed $102 million over five years under the National Anti-Drug Strategy to support law enforcement in combating the production and distribution of illegal drugs. Steps taken against organized crime, gangs, illegal guns and drugs include:

- A Police Officer Recruitment Fund;

- Over 1,500 new RCMP;

- The expansion of programs to prevent youth from joining gangs;

- Mandatory prison sentence for gun crimes;

- New legislation to increase penalties for gang- and organized crime- related violence and drug trafficking.

- Re-introducing legislative amendments that would impose mandatory jail time for people involved in serious crime.

"This government's message is clear - the production, trafficking and distribution of illegal drugs in our communities will not be tolerated. We will continue to provide law enforcement with the tools they need to tackle organized crime and drug traffickers," added Minister Van Loan.

TADEAU is a joint law enforcement group comprised of investigators and officials from the RCMP, Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), Peel Regional Police, the Toronto Police Service and Ontario Provincial Police. Officials with the Controlled Delivery Team intercept and track incoming illegal drugs.
