Statement: Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day Comments on Arrests of Alleged Human Smugglers

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 29, 2007) - The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, issued the following statement following the arrests of alleged human smugglers operating in two separate organizations.

"I would like to commend the RCMP, the Canada Border Services Agency, and the Integrated Border Enforcement Team (IBET) along with their United States partners for their outstanding work that led to these arrests.

Disrupting these two operations demonstrates the strong day-to-day cooperation that exists between Canadian and United States law enforcement at the border.

It is also a clear example of Canada's commitment to the global fight against human trafficking and human smuggling. Our efforts to combat trafficking in persons are guided by the internationally recognized framework known as the "3Ps": prevention of trafficking, protection of victims, and prosecution of offenders.

We work closely with our international partners to ensure that our country will not be a safe haven for human smugglers. Let me be clear, Canada will not tolerate human smuggling and will continue its efforts to combat the irregular movement of people.

Our Government is committed to ensuring that we take the steps necessary to strengthen our national security and protect our borders and has strengthened efforts to prevent illegal migration."
