Statement: VIA Rail Labour Dispute

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 24, 2009) -

By the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Labour

In view of the current situation, I am disappointed that the parties were not able to reach a settlement. I understand that progress has been made at the bargaining table, and I encourage the parties to continue working in cooperation with our mediator. I stand ready to appoint an arbitrator to settle the outstanding issues in dispute at the parties' request.

The Government of Canada's main concerns are the national economy and the interests of Canadian families, many of whom depend on Via Rail service. In the interest of the travelling public and at this time of the year when tourism is at its peak, I urge all those involved to continue talks and reach an agreement as soon as possible.
