Statement by the Honourable Chuck Strahl Ratification Vote by the Cree of Quebec

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 15, 2007) - The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Metis and Non-Status Indians, issued the following statement today:

"I am encouraged by these results which indicate strong support for the Cree-Canada New Relationship Agreement. I would like to commend the Cree of Quebec, Grand Chief Matthew Mukash and other community leaders for their hard work and participation in this ratification process.

This positive outcome shows what can be accomplished when we sit down with our partners and work to find common solutions through dialogue.

This Agreement seeks to establish the basis for a new relationship between the Government of Canada and the Cree of Quebec, and put an end to years of controversy over Canada's obligations under the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement. Through dialogue, we have worked together to resolve longstanding disputes to the benefit of the Cree of Eeyou Istchee and all Canadians.

Now that the results are in, Canada's New Government will proceed to conclude its ratification process."
