Sterling Commerce Announces Innovation Award Winners at Customer Connection 2010

Five Companies Recognized for Their Excellence in Optimizing and Transforming Their Business Collaboration Networks

DALLAS, TX--(Marketwire - April 15, 2010) -  Sterling Commerce Customer Connection -- At the close of its user conference last night, Sterling Commerce, an AT&T Inc (NYSE: T) company, announced the winners of this year's Innovation Awards, recognizing companies that have demonstrated innovation and vision in applying technology to achieve competitive advantage. The winners -- leaders in their respective industries -- have demonstrated innovative ways to optimize and transform collaborative business processes to better serve their customers, reduce costs and protect their reputations.

The theme for the awards is, "Excellence in Optimizing and Transforming Your Business Collaboration Network." A Business Collaboration Network (BCN) is a company's ecosystem of customers, partners and suppliers. The customers selected for this year's awards have leveraged Sterling Commerce collaborative applications and integration solutions to optimize their BCN to become smarter, more efficient and more competitive in an effort to increase revenues and reduce costs.

"These companies demonstrate that optimizing their BCNs can be a competitive differentiator," said Joel Reed, senior vice president, Product Management and Marketing, at Sterling Commerce. "It was a tough year for business throughout 2009. Sterling Commerce is proud to recognize and support companies with the confidence and vision to continue innovating. By making the best use of our solutions to connect, communicate and collaborate, these companies have solved complex business process challenges that enable them to operate more efficiently and increase customer satisfaction."

The 2010 Innovation Award categories and winners are:

  • Managing Diverse Partner Communities -- Unisource Canada, Canada's largest single-source distributor of printing products, graphic arts, packaging and facility supplies, achieved 100 percent electronic data interchange (EDI) compliance among its core suppliers -- many of whom were not EDI-enabled -- and "greened" their operations by reducing processing of paper documents using a simple and cost-effective web form.

  • Seamless and Secure B2B Integration -- CSX Technology, one of the nation's leading transportation companies, sought to create an agile supply chain by incorporating more electronic communications, supporting more formats and accommodating customized data to integrate with its legacy systems. As a result of the implementation, CSX can now set up new customers in under 10 minutes and reduced VAN transaction costs by more than $2.7 million over four years.

  • Achieving higher levels of customer satisfaction with Managed File Transfer -- Seamless and automated cash management services for corporate customers -- DBS Bank, one of the largest financial services groups in Asia, set up a single host-to-host platform that allowed their corporate customers to enjoy automated Cash Management services seamlessly. In 5 months, this cutting-edge solution has allowed the bank to deliver their services and products to more customers than was possible in the previous year. To provide their customers peace of mind, the bank also maintained a high level of data integrity and confidentiality while reducing corporate risk.

  • Delivering Seamless Cross Channel Experience -- Cengage Learning, a leading global provider of innovative teaching, learning and research solutions, undertook an entirely new business model -- a book rental model -- for the company to counter the academic publishing market by implementing a new ecommerce solution. Through CengageBrain.com, a user-friendly textbook rental website, students can rent textbooks for up to 70 percent less than the suggested retail price. The solution supports the company's multiple lines of business and offers the latest in coupon, discount, multi-storefront, promotion or campaign functionality.

  • Simplifying Supply Chain Execution -- Heinz, the global food company, significantly reduced their transportation processing costs through improved carrier management and addressed sustainability issues by taking control of this key leg of the supply chain. Through the initiative, Heinz gained increased visibility into its supply chain through leveraging its investments in the Sterling GIS platform, Sterling Collaboration Network and Sterling TMS platforms.

"This recognition from Sterling Commerce highlights our constant drive towards innovation in increasing operational efficiencies and revenue streams," said Lim Boon Khee, Vice President, Technology and Operations, at DBS Bank. "Our new capabilities ensure that DBS' corporate customers are empowered with new services and options that give them greater control, while providing us with a higher level of channel visibility."

"We're honored to receive this recognition from Sterling Commerce for our efforts to transform our supply chain," said Scott Steeves, Director of Transportation & Warehousing at Heinz North America. "Simplifying our inbound and outbound transportation processes has been a key enabler in managing our carrier base and has provided the visibility for us to more efficiently control our costs. We are now able to clearly identify opportunities for improvements and quickly take the actions necessary to transform Heinz into a Supply Chain leader."

Sterling Commerce solutions help companies work more efficiently and profitably within their communities of business partners, customers and suppliers. The company's collaborative applications for multi-channel selling and supply chain fulfillment manage the end-to-end orchestration of complex order lifecycles. Its business integration solutions for secure file transfer and B2B integration conquer complex business process integration challenges.
