Strike Threat Averts Job Losses at Alcan Packaging

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(CCNMatthews - Jan. 11, 2007) - Amicus members at Alcan Packaging in Salterbeck, Cumbria call off strike over job losses after successful talks with management yesterday.

Workers in the print department of the factory at Salterbeck had voted to take industrial action over job cuts they said would make the maintenance of current production levels impossible.

Amicus Regional Officer, Edward Irvine, said:

"Amicus and Alcan Packaging have agreed on an amicable solution which satisfactory for both our members and the company. It was clear that the initial proposal was a quick fix and that it could not have been workable in the long-term.

"We are pleased with the outcome which has only been achieved through our members working in solidarity."

Alcan Packaging supplies major brands such as Kellogg's, Nestle and Walkers.
