Strike Vote by OSSTF School Support Staff in Ottawa-Carleton Sends Strong Message to Board

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 14, 2008) - The members of four support staff bargaining units with the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF) District 25 have voted 96.7% overall in favour of taking strike action if necessary to achieve their contract goals.

The Education Support Professional voted 91.3% in favour of strike action.

The Plant Support Staff Unit voted 97% in favour of strike action.

The Educational Assistants voted 98.5% in favour of strike action.

The Professional Student Services Personnel voted 100% in favour of strike action.

"The frustration our members are feeling about the pace of negotiations is reflected in the strength of the strike vote in all four bargaining units. This vote shows our bargaining teams have a clear mandate to take strike action and should deliver a clear message to the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board that the time to get serious about negotiating a deal is now," said Jack Jones, Executive Officer of OSSTF and Chair of the District 25 bargaining teams representing support staff.

Jones also commented that, "The significance of this vote should not be underestimated by the employer. The Board needs to understand that the decision by these bargaining units to once again co-ordinate their strike votes reflects how dissatisfied our members are with the lack of progress and the Board's unwillingness to negotiate."

OSSTF/FEESO, founded in 1919, has 60,000 members across Ontario. They include public high school teachers, occasional teachers, educational assistants, continuing education instructors, psychologists, secretaries, speech-language pathologists, social workers, plant support personnel, attendance counsellors, and many others in education.
