Striking Hydro One professionals to rally at MPP Curling's office

Attention: Assignment Editor, Business/Financial Editor, Energy Editor, News Editor, Tech/Telecomm Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Aug. 31, 2005) - Media advisory - Anticipating an imminent by-election call, 300 striking Hydro One professionals will rally at Liberal MPP Alvin Curling's office Thursday morning before going to every household in the riding with a message about Liberals tolerating the discriminatory firing of a group of young professionals by Hydro One.

Date: Thursday September 1, 2005

Time: 10:00 am

Location: Alvin Curling Constituency Office
5200 Finch Ave East, Scarborough
(East of McCowan and West of Markham Rd)

What: Kickoff of mass information leafleting of the Scarborough-Rouge River Riding.
Striking members of the Society of Energy Professionals will rally in front of Mr. Curling's former constituency office before departing at 10:30 a.m.

Chinese and Tamil spokespersons will be available.

Background: Alvin Curling announced last week he has accepted a position as Canadian Ambassador to the Dominican Republic. Striking energy professionals say this is an opportunity to tell the community that Liberals are tolerating discrimination by Hydro One and prolonging the dispute with the provincially owned firm.

Hydro One engineers and other professionals have been forced off the job for over 12 weeks now because they are unwilling to accept a policy of wage discrimination that would permanently shortchange newcomers to their engineering ranks. Last week Hydro One has summarily fired young engineers affected by the proposed policy.

The Society of Energy Professionals represents more than 6,000 professional employees in the electricity industry in Ontario, including engineers, scientists, supervisors, and others. The Society is Local 160 of the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers.
