Summer Cooking Camp Heats Up the Kitchen

Kitchen Kid Offers Summer Camp With Farmers' Market Field Trips and Delectable Weekly Themes

SANTA MONICA, CA--(Marketwire - June 17, 2010) -  For some, July brings surf, sand, and sun. But for many kids, summer vacation is the perfect time to unleash their inner Top Chef and cook-up fun in the kitchen.

Kitchen Kid, a Santa Monica-based mobile culinary school for kids and families, brings back its popular cooking camp again this summer with 5-weeks of delicious fun and farmers' market field trips. Kitchen Kid will offer week-long cooking camps in Santa Monica beginning June 28. Kitchen Kid Cooking Camp promises a summer of creative cooking, fun learning, and sharing good food with friends. With the belief that culinary education is essential to raising healthy, happy children, Kitchen Kid has designed a program for young foodies and kitchen newcomers that emphasizes a holistic approach to the kitchen. Through the lens of cooking, Kitchen Kids strengthen self-confidence and engage in teamwork while building math, science, nutrition, reading, and geography skills.

Growing Gourmands
For Growing Gourmands, children ages 7 and older, Kitchen Kid will dish-up delicious menu themes, including:

  • Around the World (with trips to Italy, France, Mexico, and Japan),
  • All Day Buffet (from savory breakfast to sweet dessert),
  • Fun Finger Foods (with favorites like mini scones, Vietnamese spring rolls, and chocolate bonbons), and
  • Celebrity Chefs and Food Network Faves (complete with Top Chef-style quickfires and film clips).

Farmers' Market Organic Iron Chef Challenge!

The most exciting part of Kitchen Kid's summer location at the First Presbyterian Church on the Third Street Promenade, is its close proximity to the world renowned Santa Monica Farmers' Market. On Wednesdays, children take a field trip to meet local farmers and explore the day's harvest. Class begins in the courtyard, where students learn about the farmers' market and discover the "secret ingredient of the day." Armed with spending money and culinary creativity, kids handpick local produce and return to the kitchen for an organic Iron Chef challenge, Kitchen Kid style. Camper-developed recipes from last year's tomato challenge included stuffed cherry tomatoes, roasted tomato soup, and tomato and herb tart. This unique opportunity embodies Kitchen Kid's dedication to "farm to table" education and is truly the highlight of their summer programming.

Cooking for the Community
Great chefs know that one of the joys of the kitchen is the delight in cooking for others.

  • In partnership with the Westside Food Bank, Kitchen Kid campers make and bake goodies for those less fortunate each week.
  • On Fridays, parents are invited to join their children around the table for a delicious tasting of the week's eats.
