Suncor Energy, Alberta Conservation Association win national award for terrestrial conservation offsets

Calgary, Alberta (February 8, 2008) - Alberta Conservation Association (ACA) and the Suncor Energy Foundation have been recognized by Imagine Canada for their conservation offset initiative in the boreal forest. The award was presented Thursday in Calgary at the Business and Community Partnership Awards, which recognize innovative collaborations between leading businesses and their non-profit partners.
The Boreal Habitat Conservation Initiative, a first for Alberta in terrestrial conservation offsets, was set in motion in 2003 when Suncor entered into a pilot project with ACA to protect boreal forest habitat in the Winagami Lake area. The partnership culminated in a three-year $1 million investment by the Suncor Energy Foundation, which led to 1,750 acres of ecologically significant boreal habitat being secured for conservation by ACA.
"We are pleased to be recognized as part of this innovative partnership," said Gord Lambert, vice president, Sustainable Development for Suncor. "Through a shared vision and complementary expertise, ACA and Suncor are making a lasting contribution to boreal forest conservation efforts in Alberta."

"The voluntary initiative taken by Suncor and the success of the partnership has launched similar projects with other oil and gas companies," said Todd Zimmerling, president and CEO of Alberta Conservation Association. "We work together every step of the way, by means of an advisory committee to ensure this land is available for future generations to enjoy, value and use."

About ACA: Established in 1997, Alberta Conservation Association is a non-profit organization that conserves, protects and enhances fish, wildlife and habitat for all Albertans to enjoy, value and use.
