The Suncor Energy Foundation invests in initiatives aimed at enriching Wood Buffalo communities

Fort McMurray, Alberta (October 24, 2006) — The Suncor Energy Foundation today announced three community investments aimed at supporting the rapidly growing Wood Buffalo region. These initiatives are part of Suncor's long-standing commitment to this area.

"Our goal is to help ensure that Fort McMurray and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo remain vibrant places to live and work," said Heather Kennedy, vice president, employee and community relations. "These new initiatives focusing on environmental awareness, improved education and developing local leaders are part of our broader efforts to support and enhance our communities."

The Foundation's latest investments amount to more than $380,000 for the following three initiatives:

  • $89,000 over three years to Project Webfoot, a national wetland and environmental education program run by Ducks Unlimited Canada. This money will allow nearly 2,000 Grade 5 students from the region to participate in an enhanced wetland ecosystem study at Suncor's Crane Lake reclamation area.
  • $145,000 to the Northland School Division to help purchase and install a videoconferencing system. This will allow the 24 schools in this sprawling northern Alberta division to be connected and to share resources. Students in remote areas will have access to much-needed specialists as well as a broader range of courses taught via videoconference to classes across the region.
  • $150,000 over three years to Leadership Wood Buffalo, a program aimed at developing leaders who will work to enhance their own communities. The program builds leadership capacity in government, non-profit and private sector roles.

With these contributions, Suncor and the Suncor Energy Foundation have invested more than $10 million in charitable and non-profit initiatives in Wood Buffalo since 2001.

The Suncor Energy Foundation is a private, non-profit charitable foundation established to manage and administer Suncor's community contributions through donations to Canadian charitable organizations.
