Suncor Energy prepares for planned maintenance activities at Sarnia refinery

Sarnia, Ontario (September 1, 2006) — Suncor Energy Products Inc. announced today that preliminary work for a planned maintenance shutdown at its Sarnia, Ontario refinery will begin September 2.

The preliminary work involves the shutdown and securing of portions of the facility in advance of the maintenance shutdown, which is scheduled to commence in stages beginning the following week. Some portions of the plant will remain in operation and Suncor will continue to produce fuel throughout the shutdown, although at reduced rates. However, Suncor has plans in place to ensure that all supply agreements with customers will be met.

In addition to routine maintenance during the shutdown, various modifications to the facility will be undertaken as part of Suncor's plans to further integrate the refinery with the company's oil sands operations. When complete in 2007, these modifications are expected to allow the facility to process up to 40,000 barrels per day of oil sands sour crude.

The maintenance and modification activities, including preparations, are expected to take approximately eight weeks to complete. During peak periods of the shutdown, there will be approximately 900 additional contractors working with Suncor personnel on maintenance activities.

Suncor's objective is to complete all work in a safe manner while minimizing any impacts on our neighbours and the environment. Although this maintenance work may result in an increase in flaring, noise and traffic related to Suncor's operations, precautions have been taken to ensure these disruptions are kept to a minimum.
