Suncor Energy releases update on sustainability performance

Calgary, Alberta (October 27, 2008) — Suncor Energy Inc. today released a web-based snapshot of the company's 2007 sustainability performance. The report is a supplement to the company's biennial sustainability report.

"Our stakeholders have asked for more frequent updates so they can monitor Suncor's progress. We are accountable to our stakeholders for our performance and that must be supported by communicating timely and relevant data," says Gord Lambert, vice president, sustainable development.

Suncor's performance in 2007 shows both successes and areas for improvement. Our employee and contractor safety performance improved, we made positive gains on our water use intensity, and our wind power capacity increased by more than 50 percent to 147 megawatts.

Also in 2007, our energy intensity and greenhouse gas emissions intensity were higher, mainly due to lower production levels that arose from a combination of planned shutdowns and unplanned outages. Suncor recognizes that safe and reliable operations are interdependent with our environmental performance. Operational excellence is aggressively being pursued throughout all areas of the company.

A full report on Suncor's sustainability performance will be provided to stakeholders in 2009.
