Suncor Energy responds to fire at oil sands facility

Fort McMurray, AB (January 23, 2007) — Suncor Energy today reported a fire in a diluent recovery unit of Upgrader 2 at the company's oil sands facility. The fire, which began at approximately 1:15 p.m. MT, was quickly brought under control by Suncor's on-site emergency services, but is expected to continue to burn under controlled conditions until remaining product in the unit is consumed.

There are no reported injuries and all employees and contractors have been accounted for.

Production from Upgrader 2 has been temporarily reduced; Upgrader 1 is continuing with normal operations. Regulators have been notified.
