Suncor Energy takes action on Alberta government order

Fort McMurray, Alberta (September 21, 2007) — Suncor Energy is taking steps to comply with an Environmental Enforcement Order issued today by Alberta Environment.

The order relates to emissions at Suncor's Firebag in-situ oil sands operation north of Fort McMurray. During two months of ambient air quality monitoring at the Firebag site, the amount of hydrogen sulphide emissions has exceeded ambient air quality guidelines. While the emission levels are within Alberta occupational health and safety limits, they do cause odours.

"We take this situation very seriously and are committed to getting it resolved as quickly as possible. We're focused on generating safe, reliable production and that includes resolving issues that impact air quality," said Kirk Bailey, Suncor's executive vice president, oil sands.

Bailey said Suncor will develop an action plan by Sept. 28 that outlines immediate actions to be taken to minimize emissions. A more comprehensive plan that reflects longer term actions, will be submitted by Oct. 22. This will detail how Suncor will bring the plant into compliance, including plans to construct vapour recovery units and/or emission abatement equipment.

These future improvements to control emissions are aligned with work already underway at the site. Suncor has launched four separate projects to address venting issues and this work is being expedited. The company has also introduced process control changes to mitigate emissions as well as under taking comprehensive air monitoring.

The work to control emissions at the Firebag site is expected to occur without impacting crude oil production.

This news release contains forward-looking statements that address goals, expectations or projections about the future.
