Suncor Energy to complete new milestone on highway interchange

Fort McMurray, Alberta (August 8, 2008) — Suncor Energy today announced it is about to begin to erect overpass girders as part of the Highway 63 interchange construction. This piece of work will complete a major milestone in the project, which is designed to improve highway safety during the construction and operation of the company's new Voyageur upgrader, part of its $20.6 billion oil sands expansion.

To minimize traffic disruptions and maintain a safe route of travel for motorists, a new detour will be in place to allow for overpass girder erection, diverting traffic around the site and back onto Highway 63. This detour is expected to begin around mid-August, subject to weather conditions, and be in effect until the opening of the interchange in late 2008.

Suncor reminds motorists to plan extra time for safe travel, use caution and maintain the posted speed of 50 km/hr in the construction zone.

In April of 2008, Suncor and the Province of Alberta announced an agreement for the construction and maintenance of this interchange. Under the agreement, Suncor will pay for and construct the $55 million interchange, to be built about 25 kilometres north of Fort McMurray. Upon completion, which is expected in December 2008, the Province will assume ownership of the interchange following passing of all quality assurance inspections.

The new highway infrastructure is expected to benefit users of Highway 63 north of Fort McMurray, including employees and tradespeople working at Suncor's existing and planned operations, as well as community residents and workers at industry sites further north.
