Suncor Energy's Tim Gondek appointed executive director of Oil Sands Safety Association

Fort McMurray, Alberta (November 9, 2006) — Steve Williams, executive vice president, Suncor Energy Inc. Oil Sands is pleased to announce the appointment of Tim Gondek as executive director of the Oil Sands Safety Association (OSSA).

"Tim, who currently represents Suncor on the OSSA Steering Committee and Board of Directors, has been instrumental along with many others in the successes OSSA has had to date," says Williams who is also Chairman of OSSA's Board. "I am pleased to see him taking on a greater role in this organization and look forward to seeing the impact this very important group will continue to make in our region, province and beyond."

Gondek has been with Suncor's operations for the past 17 years and has held several environment, health and safety roles.  In his new role, Tim will continue to execute the strategies and plans of the previous executive director, Scott Lewis, who retired a few months ago.

"It is an honour to become more involved with OSSA. The organization has accomplished so much in a relatively short amount of time," says Gondek.  "I know that there will continue to be exciting times ahead for the Association and its stakeholders as we continue towards our vision of creating incident-free workplaces."

"To date, OSSA has been successful in standardizing Oil Sands safety training and regional codes of practice such as fall protection, confined space, fire watch and aerial work within the region," says Williams. "Tim's appointment will continue to support the collaboration of oil sands owners in designing and implementing an agreed set of safety training standards and practices."

OSSA is a non-profit organization made up of representatives from Suncor Energy, Syncrude Canada Ltd., Albian Sands and Canadian Natural Resources Ltd, with involvement from government, labour, trades, and other industry and safety organizations.

Since OSSA's inception in July 2003, over 60,000 workers have successfully completed one or more of the five OSSA accredited safety training programs.
