Suncor participates in measuring quality of life in Wood Buffalo region

Calgary, Alberta (February 3, 2006) — Findings are now available from a study measuring the quality of life in the Wood Buffalo region. Suncor Energy Inc. was part of the Sustainable Community Indicators subcommittee that developed the indicators in partnership with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) and the Athabasca Regional Issues Working Group (RIWG).

The 21 indicators measured the quality of life compared to three other Alberta communities — Edmonton, Grande Prairie and Medicine Hat. The study findings provide a mixed picture of the quality of life in Fort McMurray and the Wood Buffalo region, highlighting both strengths and weaknesses.

Suncor helped to facilitate the project, working with both industry and regional partners. Going forward, the indicators will be valuable in assisting the community decide where to place its priorities over the coming years. Work has already begun to address one of the lagging indicators -- recycling. With RMWB, Suncor is jointly funding a community education and awareness program.

Visit the RMWB web site to view the working and summary documents for the Sustainable Community Indicators.
