Sustainable Energy's SUNERGY Inverters Power Largest Commercial Rooftop Solar PV System in Western Canada

The Ridge Professional Building Highlights Renewable Energy Leadership in Medicine Hat, AB

MEDICINE HAT, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Dec. 18, 2009) - Sustainable Energy Technologies Ltd (TSX VENTURE:STG) ("Sustainable Energy" or the "Company") announced today the grand opening of the largest commercial rooftop solar PV system west of Toronto. The solar power plant installed atop the Ridge Professional Building utilizes Sustainable Energy's extra-low voltage SUNERGY inverter technology.

The Ridge Professional Building located in Medicine Hat, AB now has a 30 kilowatt rooftop PV system that will supply approximately 50 percent of the building's electrical needs. Using solar PV modules from Day4 Energy of Burnaby, B.C. along with Sustainable Energy's SUNERGY inverter technology, this Western Canadian technology-powered system will produce 40 megawatt hours a year for the progressive business center.

The SUNERGY distributed inverters offer cost, performance and safety advantages over high voltage inverters for rooftop solar PV systems:

  • SUNERGY inverters are rated for operation in temperatures ranging from minus 40 degrees C to plus 50 degrees C, allowing them to be mounted on rooftops anywhere in the world. Outdoor mounted inverters avoid the problem of live DC voltage from the solar panels remaining inside the building, even after utility power is disconnected. Traditional inverters are mounted indoors and can operate at voltages as high as 600V presenting a safety hazard.
  • In addition to preventing the intrusion of DC voltage into the building, SUNERGY inverters have enabled the installation at Medicine Hat to operate below 120V DC, minimizing the risk to firefighters and other personnel accessing the rooftop.
  • Patented SUNERGY multiple power point tracking and the elimination of module mismatch losses generate power yield improvement of 3 percent to 5 percent over high voltage products. In congested rooftop applications, energy yield can be improved as much as 15 percent.
  • Roof mounted, low voltage inverters mean higher system availability throughout the year and simpler, lower cost of maintenance which can be carried out by local trades without relying on manufacturer personnel.
