Swinton Bikes Calls for Riders to Brush Up on Observational Skills

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - June 20, 2010) - As the biking season gets into full swing, Swinton Bikes has advised riders to spend more time focusing on observational skills to improve safety on the roads.

Following a recent survey by the leading motorcycle insurance broker which revealed that some of the top 10 distractions for bikers included pedestrians, debris in the road, car drivers and children or animals playing close to the road, Swinton Bikes has urged riders to think harder when it comes to observations.

Anthony Aronin, Head of Swinton Bikes, said: "Many riders fall into bad habits after taking their test. We urge all bikers to ride as though they are being followed by an instructor, making the necessary observations.

"Focusing on the whole scene and anticipating the actions of other road users makes you a more efficient rider, enabling you to make proactive rather than reactive decisions."

Swinton Bikes has also issued a recommendation that bikers invest in an advanced training course to improve their riding skills.

Anthony Aronin added: "Although the cost of an advanced training course may seem excessive at first, it could lead to a long term saving. The skills taught on the course will help to improve your road safety, reducing the likelihood of an accident and, as a result, reducing the likelihood of having to pay  bike insurance excess or buying new equipment. You may also be entitled to a discount on your motorbike insurance."

Swinton Bikes has issued the following tips to improve observational skills:

  • Look out for pedestrians – pay special attention to children playing at the side of the road
  • Watch out for other moving vehicles – make sure that other motorists aware of your presence and checking their mirrors
  • Beware of stationary vehicles – watch out for parked cars pulling away
  • Check road surfaces – take extra care if there is any debris left in the road from road works or litter
  • Beware of any other hazards – ensure that there are no stray animals or dogs off leads
  • Check conditions to the rear of the bike as well as to the front – carry out mirror and shoulder checks
