Swinton Reveals 42% Increase in Speeding Convictions

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - June 16, 2010) - Despite a decline in the number of reported national road casualties, Swinton Insurance has released stark new figures which reveal a 42% increase in the number of car insurance enquiries from customers with speeding convictions in the last 12 months.

With current figures revealing a seven per cent decrease in reported road casualties between 2007 and 2008, Swinton car insurance revealed its latest statistics in a bid to warn motorists of the ongoing dangers of speeding.

Figures released by the Department for Transport showed that there were a total of over 230,000 road casualties in 2008, with 2,538 reported fatalities, twenty five per cent of which were attributed to speeding₁.

Steve Chelton, insurer development manager for Swinton car insurance, said: "Speeding is one of the greatest dangers on our roads yet our research shows that in the last 12 months there has been a massive increase in the number of drivers with speeding convictions. This is extremely worrying, and while we have seen high-profile drink driving and mobile phone campaigns in recent months, perhaps there needs to be a focus on reckless driving.

"Many motorists feel as though the government has installed more speed cameras as a way to make money rather than combat speeding – however our survey into driver attitudes reveals that over 60% of speeding drivers did it because they didn't think they would get caught. Perhaps people would be dissuaded from speeding if the penalties were greater."
