Swinton Warns Bikers of the Dangers of Untreated Roads

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Dec. 20, 2009) - UK motorcyclists are being warned of the dangers of driving on untreated roads this Christmas.

As the weather turns more wintery, Swinton, the UK's leading high street retailer of motorcycle insurance, is advising bikers to keep to the main roads and avoid taking shortcuts on non-gritted roads to avoid an unnecessary accident and a possible motorbike insurance claim.

A poll of 1,000 motorbike insurance customers by Swinton, found that 77% of bikers dread driving during the winter months with their biggest concerns being ice on the roads (31%) as it affects grip, accelerating, cornering, braking and lean angles.

The poll also showed that 28% of bikers were concerned about salt on the road as it can adhere to the bike forming a corrosive coating which can cause erosion. It also reduces visibility by leaving a residue on visors.

Anthony Aronin, Head of bike insurance at Swinton said "Driving during the winter months can be particularly treacherous with unpredictable and dangerous driving conditions such as snow and ice. With a potential shortage of gritting salt this winter, roads could be more vulnerable to a lengthy freeze. We urge all bikers to take extra care during the icy weather and stick to the main roads where possible.

"Some bikers will see riding through winter as a challenge and a way to hone their skills and get a better feeling for the handling aspects of their bike as well as the grip. It forces better bike control which will automatically make them a better rider."
