System 636: The Certified Flue Gas Venting System

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Jan. 8, 2007) - The use of plastic venting systems on gas fired water heaters, furnaces and boilers in Canada is undergoing a significant change. In the summer of 2006, the CSA B149.1 Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code was amended to require all plastic venting materials to be certified to the ULC S636 standard. The code amendment will be published January 1, 2007.

"Provincial regulators across Canada changed the B149.1 Code to make certain that all plastic vent systems are certified to a recognized standard", says Trevor Johnston, Business Development Manager for IPEX. As a result IPEX has completed the certification process and is pleased to introduce System 636. System 636 PVC is certified for use on appliances producing flue gases at 65 degreesC or less while System 636 CPVC is rated for flue gases of 90 degreesC or less. These certified vent systems are designed for negative or positive pressure venting of gas-fired appliances.

The ULC S636 standard mandates that vent must be distinguished as a certified flue gas venting system through orange warning labels and special markings on pipe and fittings. Johnston advises installers to "look for the orange label and the mark of a recognized certification agency as assurance the system you're using is approved and meets the Code." Both System 636 PVC and CPVC are uniquely certified as 'systems', thus making it vital that vent is installed as a complete system of pipe, fittings and solvent cements. If any System 636 component is substituted with that of another manufacturer, the certification to the ULC S636 standard becomes void - this 'system certification' is mandated by ULC and will be enforced by inspectors in 2007.

System 636 will be available nation wide January 2nd, 2007.
