TOWN HALL Panel Discusses the Economic and Emotional Toll of Alzheimer's Disease

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - October 11, 2007) - TOWN HALL LOS ANGELES and the Alzheimer's Association present "Alzheimer's Disease: A Pending Crisis - Are We Ready?," a panel discussion, Wednesday, October 24 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel. The program is another installment of TOWN HALL's Health Care Series. Angelenos have the opportunity to ask about the emotional and economic effects of Alzheimer's on individuals and businesses.

Panelist Jonathan Fielding, MD, MPH, Director and Health Officer for the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, said, "This is not a rare disease; this is a common disease and it's going to become much more common as the population ages. While most of the other chronic diseases are going down in frequency, this really stands out as one that is growing very very rapidly."

In 2005, Medicare spent $91 billion on beneficiaries with Alzheimer's and other dementias; that number is projected to reach $189 billion by 2015. Additional panelists include Shelley Freeman, Regional President of LA Metro for Wells Fargo and Alzheimer's patient caretaker; Debra Cherry, PhD, Executive Vice President of the Alzheimer's Association; and Richard Bozanich, journalist and early-onset Alzheimer's patient.

Throughout its history, TOWN HALL has focused on health care. Recently, Town Hall convened a morning conference on America's Health Care Crisis with keynote address delivered by William R. Brody, MD, President of Johns Hopkins University; and George Abercrombie, President and CEO of Hoffmann-LaRoche, Inc. forewarned audiences to prepare for pandemics.
