TTC Operator Assault Task Force Recommendations Complete or Underway

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - May 31, 2006) - In August 2005, the TTC Operator Assault Task Force, which included the contributions of three senior members of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113 and six TTC staff members, presented its findings. The executive summary is attached. The Task Force made 22 recommendations, all of which have been completed or are underway.

Some key recommendations were:

- Make Metropasses transferable. Transferable Metropasses were introduced in September 2005. Identification photos are no longer required, thus reducing Operator/customer fare conflicts.

- Install CCTV on vehicles as a deterrent to Operator assault and to assist in the apprehension of suspects. A pilot of the cameras was completed on the Jane bus route and new cameras are in the process of being acquired. Installation on the entire bus/streetcar fleet will begin in the fall of 2006.

- Protective Barriers. In April 2006, TTC staff and the Union developed a prototype barrier design. In June, the TTC will take the prototype design to various TTC garages for comment by Operators.

As recently as March 2006, TTC staff made a presentation of these 22 recommendations to the Amalgamated Transit Union Canadian Council, attended by approximately 400 people from various ATU locals throughout Canada. The TTC staff were acknowledged for their expertise and their contribution to the tremendous success of the conference.
