Teaching careers are top of the polls

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - April 9, 2010) -

Nearly 75 per cent of teaching professionals admitted that teaching careers were more attractive as a result of the current recession. In a recent poll by Teachers TV, 70 per cent still cite 'making a difference to children's lives' as an essential motivator to pursuing a teaching career.

Teachers TV also found that almost one in two had 'always wanted to teach'; while only one in five admitted that the amount of holiday was a reason for their career choice.

Andrew Bethell, Chief executive and creative director of Teachers TV, said:
"I never cease to be amazed by the enthusiasm that most teachers retain for teaching throughout their career. While the current economic climate may make teaching seem a particularly attractive career option, teachers only survive when they have this passion."

In the poll, teachers offered teaching career advice to other newly qualified teachers by reminiscing about their first day in the classroom, responses included:

  • "Bloody hard work and tiring but I loved it. I wished I had changed careers sooner."
  • "Fantastic! I finally had my own class who were totally my responsibility, and at the end of the month I was paid for doing something I enjoyed. I can still remember the feeling although it was 25 years ago!"
  • "My first day was hilarious. I did a maths lesson with a cereal bar to demonstrate addition; it had all been eaten by the children before the lesson had even started!"
