Despite recessionary times, creative agency The BrainStorm Group had a strong year of growth. Much of the growth is attributed to an outrageous $40,000 coupon, which ran as a full-page ad in the national press. They found a way to beat unfavorable economic conditions, by using advice offered to clients - advertise.

When the $40k ad broke, thousands of people from around the world visited the agency's website. The idea spread virally, as bloggers, industry publications and media, as far away as Japan, began writing editorial and republishing the coupon. Following the initial success, The BrainStorm Group ran the ad again with a banner humorously exclaiming 'Only 206 days left'. Online, a countdown timer tracked remaining time left to redeem accompanied by a web movie to explain the campaign.

In addition to landing new clients because of the exposure and generating a high value of editorial coverage, this was proof that advertising in tough times works.

"Despite the fact we are in the business of creating ads for a wide range of clients, very few agencies ever advertise. We wanted to change this pattern and clearly demonstrate the kind of creative thinking that gets noticed and drives interest and sales," stated Ron Telpner, Chairman and CEO.

"We also wanted to draw international attention to our capabilities, our clients and the fact this is not the time to be cutting spending on marketing, for companies that want to emerge from the recession, stronger and more profitable," said Bob Froese, President and COO.

The BrainStorm Group, an international, integrated agency located in a one-of-a-kind space in downtown Toronto, has been operating independently for 17 years and is still managed by the original three partners. The BrainStorm Group, currently works with leading recognized brands, including ADP (Canada, USA, UK, Australia), Ancestry.ca, Applebee's, Baxters Soup of Scotland, Daniels, The Dominion, epi Dubai, Jones New York, Kenneth Cole, New Roots Herbal, Old Dutch Foods, Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, Thomas Cook, U21Global University Singapore, Unity for Autism and others.
