The Be Tire Smart Mobile Project Rolls Into Pickering Town Centre

Durham Region Sustainability and The Be Tire Smart Mobile Project Will be teaming up this weekend in an effort to motivate drivers to adopt proper tire maintenance practices.

Attention: Automotive Editor, City Editor, Education Editor, Environment Editor, Transportation Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO, NEWS RELEASE--(Marketwire - Sept. 25, 2009) - "The Be Tire Smart - Play Your P.A.R.T." national education campaign will be visiting Pickering Town Centre this Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and will be conducting free tire pressure checks on vehicles. Tire inflation impacts climate change and the environment. Every litre of fuel consumed by a vehicle results in 2.4 kg of carbon dioxide being released into the environment. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. Proper tire inflation helps increase fuel efficiency thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Improper tire maintenance practices collectively cost Canadians approximately $600 million a year and causes over 1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide to be released into the atmosphere.

In addition to increased fuel consumption, improper tire maintenance also shortens the life of your tires. Replacing your tires more often means that more tires go to landfills or recycling and more energy is then used to produce new tires or to recycle them. Again, this has an impact on climate change, the environment and our health. Canadians dispose of nearly 30 million used tires every year, many of which end up in landfills.

"The number of vehicles operating with under- or over-inflated tires across the country, day in and day out, is disturbing, considering that under inflation is the leading cause of tire failure," said Glenn Maidment, President of The Rubber Association of Canada. "Our survey findings show that there is an urgent need for better tire inflation and maintenance practices."

At the show, the mobile project team will be demonstrating how to locate the proper tire pressure using their hybrid vehicle and show event patrons how to correctly measure tire pressure. Tire pressure gauges and tread wear indicators will also be distributed to event patrons. Patrons are also encouraged to take part in a short tire maintenance survey forthe chance to win a set of four new tires. (Original Equipment -OE for their personal vehicle).
