A 10-year celebration of successful healthy living programs took place in Vancouver today at the Speaking of Food and Healthy Living Awards, sponsored by Kraft Canada and Dietitians of Canada. Held in connection with the Dietitians of Canada National Conference, the Awards recognized six regional programs for their work in helping Canadians make healthier eating and activity choices. The Big Cook was selected as a regional award recipient for its focus on helping Canadians prepare healthier and more wholesome meals for themselves and their families.

The Big Cook is a cookbook and cooking concept that works to help busy singles, couples and families get organized with healthy meal preparation. Rather that undergo the stress of having to cook nutritious and delicious meals with limited time on a daily basis the cookbook encourages readers to devote one day to prepare a number of healthy meals to be used over the next few months. It motivates readers to gather a group of three to four friends for a "big cook" day to prepare over 200 meals in one session.

Joanne Smith co-author and a spokesperson for the cookbook, was in attendance to receive the regional award title and Certificate of Merit. "Canadians are always on the lookout for new ideas to help them fit healthy meals into their fast-past schedules," says Smith. "To be honoured for this initiative helps reinforce the importance of finding innovative ways to support Canadians in their quest to live healthier lives."
