The Empire District Electric Company Prices Offering of First Mortgage Bonds

JOPLIN, MO--(Marketwire - August 18, 2010) -  The Empire District Electric Company (NYSE: EDE) announced today that it priced an offering of $50,000,000 principal amount of its 5.20% first mortgage bonds. The closing is expected to occur on August 25, 2010. The bonds will mature on September 1, 2040. Interest is payable semi-annually on the bonds on each March 1 and September 1, commencing March 1, 2011. UBS Securities LLC is the sole book-running manager.

Funds raised will be used to redeem Empire's Senior Notes, 7.05% Series due 2022 (which have been called for redemption on August 27, 2010) and to repay short-term debt which was incurred, in part, to fund Empire's current construction program.
