The Government of Canada Supports Job Fair to Help Young People Find Summer Jobs

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - May 2, 2008) - Laurie Hawn, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Defence and Member of Parliament for Edmonton Centre, today attended the annual job fair for the Service Canada Centre for Youth (SCCY) in Edmonton, and met with some of the more than 15 employers who were there to showcase summer employment opportunities in the Edmonton area.

"The Government of Canada is committed to helping young people get the skills and knowledge they need to improve their employment opportunities," said Mr. Hawn. "By working with local employers, we can make sure that young people get valuable summer work experience, and that our community has a strong and vibrant work force for the future."

Young people from across the city attended the SCCY job fair to learn about innovative and interesting employment opportunities currently available to young people in the city. The job fair also provided employers with the opportunity to find enthusiastic summer help.

"Our grand opening job fair is a beneficial experience, both for employers looking for hardworking, young employees; and for youth and post-secondary students looking for summer and permanent employment," said Herman Cortes, Public Relations Coordinator, Edmonton SCCY. "This is our first major event of the season, and so we also want to let everyone know that we are officially open for business this summer!"

Service Canada Centres for Youth link youth and employers. The Centres provide young people with job postings, resume-building and job-search strategies, and interview advice, and they provide employers with a location to post job openings. SCCYs also provide valuable information on health and safety in the workplace.

This year, employers interested in using our services and youth looking for summer employment can visit the Edmonton SCCY from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. The Centre is located at Suite 73, Canada Place, 9700 Jasper Avenue, in Edmonton. To reach the Centre by telephone, call 780-495-2070; to reach the Centre by fax, dial 780-495-5070.
