The Government of Canada Supports the Gatineau Hot Air Balloon Festival

GATINEAU, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Aug. 5, 2008) - Residents and visitors to Gatineau will once again have the opportunity to see performances showcasing local artists at the Gatineau Hot Air Ballon Festival, thanks to an investment by the Government of Canada.

The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, on behalf of the Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women and Minister for La Francophonie, today announced funding for the 21st Gatineau Hot Air Balloon Festival.

Funding of $25,000 for the artistic component of the Gatineau Hot Air Balloon Festival will allow the festival to showcase the talent of local artists. Activities planned for this year's festival, which will take place from August 29 to September 1, 2008, include exhibitions, a midway, hot air balloon competitions, and musical performances.

"The Government of Canada is pleased to announce funding for the Gatineau Hot Air Balloon Festival," said Minister Verner. "We are proud to partner with communities to support activities that celebrate local history, arts, and heritage."

"Festivals like this one bring people of all ages and backgrounds together and contribute to building strong communities, like the Outaouais region," said Minister Cannon. "I am proud that our Government has taken decisive steps to strengthen our shared sense of heritage."

"For our 21st festival, we are very happy to welcome the Department of Canadian Heritage as one of our institutional partners. Thanks to this much hoped-for funding, we will be able to feature more talented local artists, which are so plentiful in Gatineau. We have many projects for the future, and, with the support of the Government of Canada, there is no doubt that the next years will be promising and that we will be able to achieve our goals," said François Grenier, Director General for the Gatineau Hot Air Balloon Festival.

The Government of Canada has provided this funding through the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program, announced in September 2007, provides Canadians with more opportunities to take part in activities that present local arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage.

Applications for funding for festivals to be held between January 1 and August 31, 2009, and for community historical commemorations between January 1 and December 31, 2009, must be received by September 1, 2008.
