The Honourable Sterling R. Lyon Invested as an Officer of the Order of Canada

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 23, 2010) - On behalf of Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, His Honour the Honourable Philip S. Lee, Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba, presented the insignia of Officer of the Order of Canada to the Honourable Sterling R. Lyon during a ceremony in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on February 22, 2010.

Sterling Lyon has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to the people of Manitoba. As a cabinet minister, premier and judge, he was renowned for his integrity and tireless dedication to serving the interests of his fellow citizens. As premier, he extended social services for the elderly and for low-income families, expanded community-based health services, and modernized governmental financial procedures. As well, he played a key role in the deliberations that led to the patriation of the Canadian Constitution. In addition to serving as a former justice of the provincial Court of Appeal, he has also championed environmental conservation as a member of various provincial and national wildlife federations.
