The Mount Sinai Medical Center Maintains Data Integrity With iWay EIM Suite

Master Patient Index Initiative Improves Data Quality of Patient Management Systems

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - June 23, 2010) -  The Mount Sinai Medical Center, an internationally acclaimed center for excellence in clinical care, education, and scientific research in medicine, knows that ailments don't only strike its patients. As a technology leader that is well known for its cutting-edge information systems, Mount Sinai has an interest in avoiding data quality problems as well. That's why the venerable New York institution has selected iWay Software's Data Quality Center (DQC) and Data Profiler, key components of the iWay Enterprise Information Management (EIM) Suite, to maintain the accuracy and integrity of its patient management systems. iWay Software is an Information Builders company and innovator of enterprise integration solutions.

"We contracted with iWay because we believe their technology will substantially reduce the effort involved in finding, merging, and correcting erroneous or duplicate records in our critical information systems," said Mark DeLaney, vice president of Information Technology at Mount Sinai. "iWay demonstrated how its EIM tools can automate our data management activities. This will allow us to expedite completion of a major prerequisite necessary to establish a longitudinal electronic medical record across our health system."

Mount Sinai is confronting a pervasive problem. Most hospitals rely on a diverse set of information systems for storing clinical and administrative information. Especially for large healthcare providers and health plans with multiple facilities, inconsistencies naturally enter these systems as patient records are created, updated, and exchanged. For example, a patient might sign in as "James W. Smith" at a radiology clinic and "JW Smith" at an outpatient surgical center. Patients also change addresses, phone numbers, and other personal information, leading to many conflicting records -- as high as 20 percent of an entire database, according to some industry estimates.

Mount Sinai plans to use the iWay technologies as part of a larger initiative that will integrate the patient databases, underlying two of its patient management systems with a wide range of its clinical systems.

In the past, Mount Sinai addressed a similar challenge using manual methods, a time consuming process. For this initiative they will rely on iWay Data Quality Center (DQC), which includes localized dictionaries as well as advanced data unification, validation, cleansing, and enrichment techniques to ensure the integrity of their information.

iWay Data Profiler links iWay Data Quality Center to Information Builders' WebFOCUS business intelligence (BI) environment to generate in-depth profiling information. This proven combination of quality monitoring, reporting, and analytical tools will enable Mount Sinai to efficiently track and compare data to eliminate discrepancies in its patient management systems. iWay Data Quality Portal -- a Web application used by businesspeople, data managers, and data stewards -- supports the full data governance workflow, allowing users to view and edit master data, address process changes that require manual interaction, view reports, and more.

"We developed iWay Enterprise Information Management (EIM) Suite to help organizations like The Mount Sinai Medical Center clean up their data more quickly, accurately, and efficiently than ever before," said Dave Watson, chief operating officer at iWay Software. "Based on our prototypes, we foresee substantial time and cost savings as we boost the effectiveness of their data quality efforts."

About The Mount Sinai Medical Center

The Mount Sinai Medical Center encompasses both The Mount Sinai Hospital and Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Established in 1968, Mount Sinai School of Medicine is one of few medical schools embedded in a hospital in the U.S. It has more than 3,400 faculty in 32 departments and 15 institutes, and ranks among the top 20 medical schools both in National Institute of Health funding and by U.S. News & World Report. The school received the 2009 Spencer Foreman Award for Outstanding Community Service from the Association of American Medical Colleges.

The Mount Sinai Hospital, founded in 1852, is a 1,171-bed tertiary- and quaternary-care teaching facility and one of the nation's oldest, largest, and most-respected voluntary hospitals. In 2009, U.S. News & World Report ranked The Mount Sinai Hospital among the nation's top 20 hospitals based on reputation, patient safety, and other patient-care factors. Nearly 60,000 people were treated at Mount Sinai as inpatients last year, and approximately 530,000 outpatient visits took place.
