The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards Honor Top Youth Volunteers in Each State

15th Annual National Awards Program Honors 102 Student Volunteers

WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwire - April 27, 2010) -  The young people of today will shape tomorrow's future. America's 102 most outstanding youth volunteers in grades 5-12, two from each state and the District of Columbia, were named State Honorees in February by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program honoring the talented young people for extraordinary acts of volunteerism. The awards program is now in its 15th year, conducted by Prudential Financial, Inc. in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

Many of 2010's volunteers addressed needs in foreign countries, especially in Africa and Latin America, while others focused on needs in their own communities. Some of the great work includes:

  • Traveling to volunteer at orphanages, build schools, create libraries, and teach impoverished children around the world.
  • Collecting food, clothing, books, school supplies, eyeglasses, teddy bears, and soccer cleats from their communities to send overseas.
  • Raising money to finance school tuitions, refugee relief, AIDS medications, cleft-palate surgeries, clean-water projects, and other critical needs in desperate communities around the world.
  • Assisting Americans who are sick or disabled, aiding the disadvantaged, tutoring or mentoring other young people, and promoting health and safety.
  • Enhancing local school or community resources, protecting the environment, taking care of animals, and supporting U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Each of the 102 State Honorees will receive $1,000, an engraved silver medallion and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., May 1-4th for several days of exciting national recognition events. While in Washington, D.C., the State Honorees will tour the capital's landmarks and visit their congressional representatives on Capitol Hill. In addition, 10 of them will be named National Honorees on May 3 by a prestigious national selection committee during an exciting awards ceremony. These honorees will receive additional $5,000 awards, gold medallions, crystal trophies and $5,000 grants from The Prudential Foundation for nonprofit, charitable organizations of their choice.

We must continue to support our youth and encourage volunteerism. This year The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards opens their doors and invites the public to view the awards ceremony from their homes, schools or desks through a live, streaming webcast event taking place on May 3, 2010 at 12:45 PM direct from Washington, D.C. To secure your viewing of this event, simply visit http://www.visualwebcaster.com/event.asp?id=67402 and register today!
